The primary goal of the White Paper is to transition the auto industry from primarily producing Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles to a dual platform that includes EVs in the production and consumption mix, alongside ICE vehicles in South Africa by 2035.
In the 2024 National Budget, South Africa’s Finance Minister laid out a framework for the country’s transition to electric vehicle production. The government will introduce an investment allowance for new investments to encourage the production of electric vehicles in South Africa in 2026 (Corporate income tax incentive).
