ZEV Related Policies
Under the EU CO2 standards, all new cars and vans must have zero CO2 emissions from 2035.

Charging Infrastructure Policies
Under the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) Member States are required to ensure a minimum total power output is provided through publicly accessible recharging stations and that fast-charging pools are installed along major European traffic corridors. The Maltese government targets installing 1,200 new charging points by 2024, up from 340 installed at the end of 2022.

Vehicle Incentives
In January of 2023, Transport Malta launched a new €15 million scheme for the purchase of new electric vehicles. Grants range from €11,000 to 40% of the invoice value capped at €70,000 for each electric vehicle purchased by eligible persons residing in Malta who do not carry out an economic activity.
