ZEV Related Policies
Under the EU CO2 standards, all new cars and vans must have zero CO2 emissions from 2035. Ireland’s Climate Action Plan 2023 targets all new passenger LDV sales to be electric and achieve 30% EV stock by 2030.

Charging Infrastructure Policies
Under the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) Member States are required to ensure a minimum total power output is provided through publicly accessible recharging stations and that fast-charging pools are installed along major European traffic corridors. The new Electric Vehicles Charging Infrastructure Strategy 2022-2025 allocates €100 million to be spent on public charging infrastructure over the next three years. The EU Just Transition Fund Community Facility EV Charging Scheme, a new charging program launched in July 2023, will invest €15 million to support fast charging infrastructure at community facilities.

Vehicle Incentives
The maximum electric passenger car grant was reduced from €5,000 to €3,500 as of July 1, 2023. In 2022, Ireland eliminated subsidies for PHEVs. Vehicle registration tax relief will remain unchanged at up to €5,000 with a maximum price of €40,000, and a reduced scale will apply for EVs up to the selling price of €50,000. With a budget of €15 million in 2023, the eSPV Grant scheme offers up to €20,000 to owners of small public service vehicles to scrap high-polluting vehicles and replace them with EVs.
